Metals
exhibit differing thermal expansion rates. Strips
formed by bonding two different metals together
will therefore bend with heat. The deflection can
be measured and a temperature reading taken. The
sensing area tends to be fairly large. No power
supply is required. The repeatability and accuracy
is low, however they are very inexpensive and robust.
Simple on / off circuits often use them, e.g. domestic
thermostats.
