Type B Thermocouple with Ceramic Sheath
The most common B type design is to protect the thermocouple with a ceramic sheath. As type B sensors are used at such high temperatures, ceramics provide the greatest protection.
Type B Thermocouple with Metal Sheath
The main purpose of selecting a B type thermocouple over other thermocouple types is to measure very high temperatures. Metal sheaths have lower operating temperatures than ceramic sheaths so this design is quite rare.
Thermocouple Type B Technical Details
Type B has a very high maximum temperature. For short periods it can be used to measure temperatures up to 1850 °C, with up to 1700 °C being measured under continuous operation. One quirk of Type B thermocouples is that its output doesn’t change between 0 and 42 °C meaning that it is unsuitable for measuring temperatures near this range. We recommened Type B thermocouples are only used for measuring above 200 °C.
